Best supplements for focus and concentration in the UK
Six things with real evidence, with doses and timescales, and the blends to skip.
01The short version
Six things have real evidence for focus and concentration in healthy adults, and they work in different ways. This is the list, UK-available, with the dose, the timescale and the catch for each. It is not sponsored and it is not twenty items long.
02The list
1. Caffeine + L-theanine (fast, cheap, tolerance)
100 mg caffeine with 200 mg theanine is the most studied focus combination there is. Better attention and fewer jitters than caffeine alone. The catch is the one everyone knows: tolerance in weeks and a crash every afternoon.
2. Semax (fast, once a day, no stimulant)
A peptide nasal spray, not a pill. One controlled study in healthy adults showed improved attention and short-term memory across an eight-hour shift, lasting 20 to 24 hours from one dose [1]. Works with your own dopamine rather than pushing it [4]. The catch: it is subtle, it is not licensed as a medicine in the UK, and you should judge it over a week rather than a day. £39 a month as FOCUS-01.
3. Creatine (slow, cheap, underrated)
3 to 5 g daily improves working memory and mental fatigue resistance, with the largest effect in people who are tired or eat little meat. Takes a few weeks to load.
4. Omega-3 (slow, only if low)
If you do not eat oily fish twice a week, 1 to 2 g of EPA/DHA daily helps over months. If you do, skip it.
5. Bacopa monnieri (slow, for memory)
300 mg standardised extract daily; measurable memory benefit at 8 to 12 weeks. Not a same-day effect.
6. Rhodiola rosea (mental fatigue under stress)
Moderate evidence for reduced mental fatigue during stressful periods; mixed elsewhere. 200 to 400 mg in the morning.
03What to skip
Multi-ingredient "focus" blends (you cannot tell what is working or what you are taking), Ginkgo for healthy adults, sugar-based energy products, and anything that lists "proprietary blend". If a product will not state the dose, it is because the dose is too small to matter.
04A sensible combination
Morning: first coffee with theanine, or Semax if coffee has stopped working. Daily: creatine in anything. Long term: fix fish intake. That covers the three timescales, fast, medium and slow, without stacking six pills.
