Is Semax legal in the UK?
The short answer, the longer one, and what it means for buying and using a Semax nasal spray in Britain.
01The short answer
Yes. Semax is not a controlled substance in the United Kingdom. It is legal to buy, own and use. It is also not a licensed medicine here, which has consequences for how it can be sold and described. Both halves of that matter, so here is the longer answer.

02Not a controlled substance
The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 are the two laws that make a compound illegal to possess or supply in the UK. Semax is not scheduled under the Misuse of Drugs Act. It is not caught by the Psychoactive Substances Act either: that law targets substances that produce a psychoactive effect by stimulating or depressing the central nervous system in the way recreational drugs do, and Semax is a neurotrophic peptide, not a stimulant or a depressant [4]. There is no offence in buying it, having it, or using it.
03Not a licensed medicine
The MHRA licenses medicines in the UK. Semax has never been through that process here, so it cannot be sold as a treatment for anything and no one may make medicinal claims about it. That is a constraint on sellers, not on buyers, and it is why COGENT describes FOCUS-01 in terms of what the research measured rather than what it “treats”. It is also why you will not find it in a pharmacy.
The practical consequence is that quality is the buyer’s problem. There is no regulator checking that a vial labelled Semax contains Semax at the stated purity. That is the single biggest risk in this market and the reason every FOCUS-01 batch ships with an independent certificate of analysis.
04Buying it in the UK
Most Semax sold online arrives as a freeze-dried powder in a vial to be reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, often labelled “for research use only”. That labelling is a legal hedge, not a safety standard, and reconstituting peptides at the kitchen table is where dosing errors and contamination happen.
A ready-made metered nasal spray, filled and sealed in the UK with a batch certificate, removes those problems. That is what FOCUS-01 is. Delivery is by tracked post within the UK, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
05Travelling with it
Legal status differs by country. Semax is a registered medicine in Russia, unregulated in most of Europe, and not approved by the FDA in the United States, where it is generally sold under research-use labelling. If you are travelling with it, keep it in its original carton with the label visible and check the destination’s rules, as you would for any supplement.
06Employers and drug tests
Semax is not a controlled substance and is not on standard workplace drug panels, which test for classes such as amphetamines, opiates, cannabinoids and cocaine metabolites. It is not a stimulant and would not be flagged as one. Some regulated employers have policies on supplements and unlicensed products generally; if yours does, it applies to Semax the same as to anything else.
