How to use a nasal spray properly (so you get the full dose)

Head level, aim outward, gentle sniff. The ten-second technique and the four mistakes that waste half the dose.

01The short version

Most people use nasal sprays badly: head tipped back, a hard sniff, and half the dose running down the throat. With a peptide spray that wasted dose is money and effect. The right technique takes ten seconds and is the same for FOCUS-01, CALM-02, a decongestant or a steroid spray.

02The technique, step by step

  1. Clear your nose. Blow gently first. A blocked nose absorbs little.
  2. Prime the pump if it is new or has not been used for a week: two or three presses into the air until a fine mist appears.
  3. Head level, not back. Look straight ahead or tilt very slightly forward. Tipping back sends the spray down the throat.
  4. Aim outward. Put the nozzle just inside the nostril and angle it toward the outer wall (toward the ear on that side), away from the septum in the middle. This is where the absorbing surface is, and it avoids irritation and nosebleeds.
  5. Close the other nostril with a finger.
  6. Press once while breathing in gently through the nose. A soft, slow sniff, not a snort. You want the mist to settle, not to be pulled into the throat.
  7. Swap sides and repeat.
  8. Do not sniff hard or blow your nose for a few minutes afterwards. Breathe normally through the mouth if you need to.
  9. Wipe the nozzle and replace the cap.

03The four common mistakes

  • Head back. The classic. Feels right, delivers the dose to your stomach.
  • Aiming at the septum. Causes stinging and bleeds and wastes the dose on cartilage.
  • Hard sniffing. Pulls the liquid past the absorbing surface.
  • Double pumping "to be sure". The pump is metered. Two presses is two doses.

04Why it matters more for a peptide spray

A decongestant works anywhere in the nose. A peptide such as Semax is absorbed across the nasal lining and along the olfactory nerves high in the nasal cavity, so where the mist lands decides how much reaches the brain. Good technique is the difference between the dose the studies used [1] and a fraction of it. If a bottle seems to "do less" than it did, technique is the first thing to check, before dose.

05Looking after the bottle

Cap on, room temperature, out of sun. Prime again after a week unused. If the spray comes out as a stream rather than a mist, the nozzle needs a rinse under warm water (nozzle only, not the bottle). Storage details are in how to store Semax.
