Oral, nasal or injectable: how peptides get into the body
Why most are injected, why Semax and Selank are sprays, which few survive the gut, and a table by peptide.
01The short version
How a peptide gets into the body decides whether it works at all. Most are injected because digestion destroys them. A few go by nasal spray, which is fast, needle-free and reaches the brain. A handful survive the gut or are built to. This guide explains the three routes, which peptides use which, and why.
02Injection: the default
Subcutaneous injection puts the peptide straight into circulation with near-complete absorption. It is why insulin, the GLP-1s, BPC-157, TB-500, secretagogues and most research peptides are injected. The costs are the obvious ones: needles, sterile technique, injection-site reactions, and a barrier that most people sensibly do not want to cross for a supplement.
03Nasal: fast and direct to the brain
The nasal lining absorbs small peptides directly, and the olfactory region at the top of the nose offers a path along nerves into the brain that bypasses the blood-brain barrier. Onset is minutes. Absorption is lower than injection but enough for potent peptides, which is why the nootropic peptides Semax and Selank, oxytocin in research, and the licensed medicine desmopressin all use it. 04Oral: rarely, and only for the exceptions
Stomach acid and enzymes cut peptides into amino acids, and the liver removes most of what survives. Oral peptides exist in three forms: ones unusually stable in acid (BPC-157 is the notable case), ones formulated with absorption enhancers (oral semaglutide, Rybelsus, uses one and still needs a dose roughly a hundred times the injection), and collagen peptides, which are simply digested and absorbed as amino acids, which is fine because that is what they are for. "Oral Semax" or "oral Selank" products are digested before they do anything.
